The presenter of the Discovery channel said that he missed the opportunity to shoot the missing submarine “Titan” OceanGate for security reasons.
Josh Gates, who leads the “Unknown Expedition” on Discovery Plus, tweeted on Wednesday (June 21) that he turned down the opportunity to shoot Titanic because the underwater vehicle “did not perform well” during a test dive.
Gates said he was given the opportunity to join OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush during a trial dive that took place in July 2021.
“For those who ask, #Titan didn’t perform very well during my dive. In the end, I turned down a huge opportunity to shoot Titanic because of my concerns about security on the @OceanGate platform. There’s something else in the history and design of Titan that hasn’t been made public, and a lot of it is concerning.”
The underwater vehicle, which was used to show tourists the wreck of the Titanic, disappeared earlier this week. According to the US Coast Guard, on Monday the car went missing off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush is among five people on board the missing underwater vehicle. Other missing passengers are British billionaire Hamish Harding, famous French diver Paul-Henri Nargole, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Daoud and his 19-year-old son Suleman.
“I pray for a positive outcome of the rescue efforts of those on board, including @ExplorersClub member Hamish Harding,” Gates wrote.
He added: “For those who wonder why people are diving on the Titanic: the ship has fascinated the world since the night it sank. This is a time capsule in another era of our history. It takes courage to make such a journey. Admiration and prayers for the passengers on board the OceanGate Titan.”
On Thursday (June 22), the US Coast Guard announced that all five passengers on board the submarine are expected to be dead, and the oxygen supply in the apparatus ran out this morning.
Elsewhere, the stepson of missing billionaire Hamish Harding recently defended his decision to attend a Blink-182 concert after Cardi B called it “cheesy.”
